Superior pitching led the Giants to an 88-win season, helping them break a streak of four consecutive losing campaigns while convincing new boss Bill Neukom to award two-year extensions to GM Brian Sabean and manager Bruce Bochy. But their feeble offense couldn’t carry them to the playoffs. Will this year be different?

The Padres are still a few seasons away from being contenders for the NL West title, especially since they don’t seem to want to spend like one. They’d be ecstatic to hit the .500 mark this season after a strong finish during the last two months of 2009 allowed them to vault past Arizona and into fourth place.

The Dodgers are no doubt a contender, but a mix-and-match starting pitching staff figures to leave them once again looking up at a handful of baseball’s truly elite teams.

The Rockies enter the 2010 season with high expectations. That’s hardly surprising after their stunning turnaround last year when Jim Tracy replaced Clint Hurdle and instilled a winning attitude in the clubhouse.

Decorated righthander Brandon Webb is back and presumed healthy after a shoulder cleanup that cost him all but one start in 2009. With him comes a belief that the Diamondbacks again will be a factor in the NL West after winning the division in 2007 and leading for 156 days in 2008.

With Opening Day rosters starting to round into shape, find out what's going on with the National League East and West teams in this week's Spring Training update.

Albert Pujols, Chris Carpenter and Adam Wainwright form a solid foundation, but the lingering question is whether the club needed to play better in the postseason or if it needed to be built better for the postseason. The Cardinals have the talent for an October push that will provide the answer.

The Pirates certainly can’t be faulted for blowing their team up and starting all over again after 17 straight losing seasons. The only problem with rebuilding is that it usually takes a considerable amount of time before there is a payoff at the major league level.
